Sharks4Kids recently returned to Big Pine Key to host its annual Girls in Shark STEM Program. The program, run in partnership with Seacamp, was originally developed in collaboration with renowned shark researcher Dr. Jeffrey Carrier. As one of the pioneers of shark science and education in the Florida Keys, Dr. Carrier believed deeply in providing young people with opportunities to experience science firsthand. Sharks4Kids is proud to continue its legacy by inspiring the next generation of marine scientists, conservationists, and ocean advocates.

The goal of the program is simple but powerful: connect local students to marine science through hands-on learning and real-world research experiences. By taking science beyond the classroom and into the field, students gain a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems while building confidence, critical thinking skills, and a sense of stewardship for the ocean.
This year, Sharks4Kids co-founders Jillian Morris and Dr. Derek Burkholder partnered with The Reef Institute to expand the program and help students understand the vital connection between sharks and coral reefs. Healthy reefs need sharks, and sharks need healthy reefs. By exploring both ecosystems, students gained a more complete understanding of how interconnected ocean life is and why conservation efforts must take a holistic approach.

Executive Director Leneita Fix and The Reef Institute team introduced an exciting new coral-focused component that broadened students’ understanding of Florida’s marine environment and the challenges facing local reefs.

Together, the organizations hosted two immersive three-day programs. The first welcomed students from Key West High School, along with science teacher Chris Ledbetter. The second brought together middle school students from Sugarloaf School and science teachers Alena Ellerbee and Zach Pomrink. Sharks4Kids was especially excited to welcome Alena back to the program, as she helped pioneer the original initiative when it launched in 2015.

Each program began with a full day of land-based learning. Students explored shark anatomy, biology, conservation, and research techniques while also learning about coral reef ecology, the current challenges facing Florida’s reefs, and the restoration work being led by The Reef Institute. Discussions focused on threats to both sharks and corals and highlighted actions students can take to help protect marine ecosystems.
The following two days were spent in the field, with one day dedicated to shark research and the other to coral reef and mangrove ecosystems. These experiences transformed classroom concepts into tangible learning opportunities. Field experiences allow students to see science in action, ask questions directly to working scientists, and gain a deeper appreciation for the importance of conservation.
Just as importantly, these programs challenge stereotypes about who can become a scientist. Many students have never met a marine biologist or participated in research before. Seeing women leading fieldwork, collecting scientific data, and working directly with wildlife helps students envision themselves in similar careers. Representation matters, and experiences like these can be the spark that inspires future scientists, educators, and conservation leaders.

Students snorkeled on coral reefs, observing reef fish and coral species while learning firsthand about the importance of these fragile ecosystems. They also kayaked through mangrove habitats, discovering how these coastal forests serve as critical nurseries for countless marine species, including sharks.
There is no substitute for experiencing nature firsthand. Reading about ecosystems in a textbook provides knowledge, but immersing students in those environments creates lasting connections. While classroom activities establish a foundation, time spent on the water transforms information into understanding and inspiration.

During the shark research field days, students worked alongside marine biologists Jillian Morris and Dr. Derek Burkholder to deploy longlines and drumlines. For every shark captured, students participated in a scientific workup, collecting valuable data used in ongoing research and conservation efforts.
Students took three length measurements, collected a small DNA sample from the trailing edge of the dorsal fin, and applied a roto tag before safely releasing each shark. Through this process, they learned not only the techniques scientists use in the field, but also the importance of collecting data to better understand and protect shark populations.
In total, students caught and tagged two nurse sharks, seven bonnethead sharks, and one great hammerhead shark. They also observed lemon sharks swimming near Seacamp's shoreline, providing another memorable wildlife encounter.
“I had such a fun time and made new friends! We went snorkeling, and I saw the coolest things. I also learned about sharks and tagged some. We went on a boat ride and caught and tagged four sharks! We went kayaking and learned about mangroves and coral. It was such a fun, unique opportunity and experience that I will remember for the rest of my life!”

One of the most unforgettable moments occurred on the final afternoon of the program. Students had helped deploy drumlines and patiently waited throughout the day with no shark activity. As the team began retrieving the lines before heading back to shore, Jillian and Derek noticed that the final drumline had moved significantly. Excitement quickly spread as students carefully pulled in the line and discovered a great hammerhead shark on the end. Working together, the group assisted researchers in collecting measurements, applying a tag, and ensuring a safe release.

The shark was a 10.5-foot male great hammerhead. Earlier that same day, students had tagged three bonnethead sharks, one of the smallest hammerhead species. By day's end, they had experienced the incredible opportunity of working with the largest hammerhead species in the world. It was a fitting reminder of the remarkable diversity found within shark populations and an experience few people ever have. Great hammerheads are a critically endangered species, so students were very lucky to have been able to see one up close.
Programs like this create impacts that extend far beyond three days. Research consistently shows that meaningful outdoor and hands-on STEM experiences increase student engagement, improve confidence, and strengthen interest in science careers. For many participants, this program represents their first opportunity to work alongside professional scientists, conduct field research, and contribute to real conservation efforts.
Living near the ocean does not automatically create a connection to it. Providing access, opportunity, and mentorship helps students develop a personal relationship with their local environment and understand their role in protecting it. Whether these students pursue careers in marine science or choose entirely different paths, the lessons, memories, and confidence gained through this experience will stay with them for years to come.

All research activities were conducted under permits issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS).
