Imagine a giant shark disappearing for years like a sea monster from an old story. Scientists thought great white sharks were almost gone from the Mediterranean Sea — until a young shark suddenly appeared.
When you think of ghosts, you probably don’t think of sharks. But there is a special group of great white sharks that scientists call a “ghost population.” A ghost population is a group of animals that scientists rarely see, so they are not sure how many are left or where they live.
In 2023, a juvenile (young) white shark was found in the Mediterranean by fishermen in an area where scientists believed great white sharks had disappeared. Now, researchers say sharks from these waters may belong to this “ghost population.”
The young shark discovered in 2023 makes scientists wonder if these sharks are still breeding there. Finding young sharks suggests that baby sharks may still be born in the Mediterranean. This could mean there are hidden shark nurseries somewhere in the sea. Young sharks are especially important to scientists because they can provide clues about where sharks are born and raised. If juvenile great white sharks are still appearing in the Mediterranean, it may mean there are areas in the sea where the sharks continue to reproduce.
