Sharks don't have a swim bladder. They rely on their large, oil-filled livers to stay buoyant in the water. In some species, the liver can take up 20% - 28% of the space inside the shark's body.

What does the shark's liver do?
-
The liver contains a low-density oil called squalene, which helps control a shark's depth in the water (buoyancy)
-
The liver helps with digestion and fat storage, which allows the shark to go for extended periods without feeding
